Adsorption of lead (II) from aqueous solution by using Ce-Mg binary oxide nanoparticle as an adsorbent

Abstract

In this paper Ce-Mg binary oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by simple co-precipitation method at room temperature for removal of lead from aqueous solution. The prepared material was characterized by XRD and TGA/DTA. Batch experiments was carried out to study the effects of the important parameters such as contact time, initial concentration of lead, dosage of nanoadsorbent and pH of the solution on the adsorption of lead by Ce-Mg binary oxide nanoparticles. The maximum removal of lead (II) is found to be 60 % at optimum pH of 5.5 at initial Pb (II) concentration of 10ppm and an adsorbent dosage of 1g/L. Dynamics of adsorption process was analyzed by applying different kinetic and thermodynamic models. The results showed that kinetics data for adsorption of lead ions shows better fit with pseudo second order model whereas the thermodynamics data showed a good fit with the Freundlich isotherm. This study indicates that Ce-Mg nanoparticles as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb (II) in water treatment.
