Abstract

THE University of Iceland was founded on June 17, 1911, the hundredth anniversary of Mr. Jόn Sigurdsson, who was a profound scholar and the nation's leader in her struggle for independence in the nineteenth century. It began its activities with four faculties, namely, theology, medicine, law and philosophy, the last-named comprising the Icelandic language, history and literature,besides philosophical studies. At first the teaching staff consisted of ten professors and a few lecturers.
