Coherent states and the interaction of swift ions with condensed matter

A swift ion moving through an electron gas is described in terms of the coherent states of the interacting system. This formulation is shown to lead simply to well known results for the wake potential generated in the medium by the passage of the ion and for the stopping power of a medium due to plasmon excitation.
