Abstract

In this paper, an 84-dB extended dynamic range 512 × 384 segmented-base CMOS image sensor is presented. The extended dynamic range is realized by a pixel-level reset control supported by a pixel sequential readout circuit. The segmented-base CMOS image sensor was introduced in [1] and shows advantages over a conventional single-imaging-parameter-based CMOS image sensor for applications such as real-time scene understanding in machine vision. This paper describes the improved sensor performance of the newly designed chip, in which 128 × 128 × 12 segments; an extended dynamic range pixel; and a 10-bit, 2.5-M-sample-per-second pipelined analog-to-digital converter are integrated. Simulations indicate that this chip achieves 152 fps per segment and the ADC dissipates less than 6.5 mW.
