Abstract

Ciclopirox is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent with antiphlogistic properties [6, 8]. Chemically, it belongs to the hydroxy-pyridone derivatives [7]. Clinical and in vitro studies have shown that ciclopirox and ciclopiroxola-mine are effective in treating mycoses of both the skin and the nails [3–5, 8, 9]. Much interest has been focused on the development of special topical formulations for the treatment of affected nails. Experimental studies have elicited that ciclopirox easily penetrates into and through human nails [1, 2]. Ciclopirox 8% nail lacquer has been proven to be effective in the therapy of onychomycosis [8]. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the optimum frequency of application of ciclopirox 8% nail lacquer in patients with onychomycosis.
