Abstract

Peer support has been proposed as a potential intervention to aid recovery across the care arc for patients and their informal caregivers following an ICU admission. This chapter summarises the current state of the art including the emerging evidence base, the practical application of various peer support models, and future directions for research. This chapter also provides insight regarding current best practice for peer support in critical care, issues encountered with implementation and proposed solutions, and how peer support programs may help provide feedback back into the ICU to mitigate common critical care workforce issues such as burnout.
