Abstract
- A 3D deformable model of the thigh's musculoskeletal system has been developed. An adjusted multibody rigid model was used to compute the bone kinematics and the muscle activation levels that drive a finite element model of the musculoskeletal system integrating contractile muscles. A thermomechanical beam model for muscle fibers was embedded in the passive muscle matrix meshed with hexahedrons with a hyperelastic quasiincompressible material law. Contacts between surrounding anatomical structures, transmitting radial forces, were modeled to investigate the effect of the interactions among muscles on the production of muscle forces. Two steps of the gait cycle were simulated. This study demonstrated that integrating such a deformable model could update the musculotendon forces traditionally computed from a multibody rigid model that fails to take into consideration 3D fiber distribution as well as muscle tightening effect.
