Le « doux Franz » et le « doux Gérard »

Cet article cherche à fonder la possibilité d’une comparaison entre le Gérard de Nerval et le compositeur Franz Schubert. La démarche part de la réception critique, qui, dans les deux cas, a élaboré puis entériné un discours psychologisant autour des motifs de retenue, modestie, sincérité, gentillesse. Nous proposons ensuite une confrontation aussi serrée que possible de deux œuvres de Nerval et de Schubert : l’adaptation qu’ils firent tous deux de la ballade de Goethe « Der König in Thule ».
This article seeks to establish the possibility of a comparison between the writer Gérard de Nerval and the composer Franz Schubert. The approach stems from the critical reception of their production, which, in both cases, elaborated and then endorsed a psychologizing, that embroiders, in both cases, schemes of restraint, modesty, sincerity, kindness. Then, we propose a confrontation as close as possible between the adaptation that they both made of Goethe’s ballad « Der König in Thule ».
