Abstract

The sperm of the lovebug, Plecia nearctica possesses an acrosome, which caps the apical and anterior lateral surfaces of a spear-shaped nucleus, which has parallel, bilateral concavities running throughout its length. At the junction of the nucleus and axial filament, a centriole adjunct has developed. An extension of this complex extends along one side of the sperm tail, partially surrounding the nebenkern and axial filament. A single nebenkern is found parallel with the axial filament along most of its length. A 9 + 0 tubule pattern exists in the axial filament with the central pair of tubules being replaced by a prominent central sheath.
