Abstract
- The precipitation of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphates from solutions with and without additives such as hydroxyethyl cellulose, colloidal silica and potato starch, has been studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. A constant rate of 10ā6 mol sā1 of reactant was added into the mixed solutions with and without additives. Nucleation frequency and morphology were dramatically altered by the addition of colloidal potato starch. It was found to be effective for non-specific nucleation of calcite and hydroxyapatite and specific nucleation of monetite. The nucleation frequency of calcite is increased by adding starch by about a factor of 104. Starch also alters the shape of hydroxyapatite to fibre-like.
