Abstract
- Globalisation in business and human movement involves the emergence of various types of foreign residents, and this brings new types of international schools into existence. This chapter discusses the activities and characteristics of organisations oriented to ethnic Japanese in Melbourne. It illustrates the major features of Japanese schools in Australia, which give evidence of sojourner-oriented characteristics, though the supplementary school has been changing in this regard. To understand the characteristics and activities of Japanese schools in Melbourne, the chapter examines how Japanese schools in Australia compare with similar schools, overseas. Although there are several organisations which involve the Japanese residents, when considering the establishment of Japanese schools overseas, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industries and the Japanese Societies have played vital roles which are explained in the chapter in detail. Keywords: foreign residents; globalisation; Japanese ethnic organisations; Japanese schools; Melbourne; sojourner-oriented characteristics
