Abstract

Purpose of the study: To evaluate the results of surgical arthrolysis of the radiocarpal joint and the distal radio ulnar joint (DRUJ) in posttraumatic stiffness of the wrist. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed selecting studies on open and arthroscopic wrist arthrolysis. Key words included: “open wrist arthrolysis,” “arthroscopic wrist arthrolysis,” “arthroscopic wrist capsular release,” “DRUJ arthrolysis.” Results: 637 studies were identified; 14 studies were selected and only 8 respected the inclusions criteria. One study focused on volar open arthrolysis of the radio carpal joint, 2 studies on open arthrolysis of the DRUJ, 4 studies on arthroscopic arthrolysis of the wrist and one study on arthroscopic DRUJ arthrolysis. Range of motion following open and arthroscopic wrist arthrolysis improved in all studies. Conclusions: Arthroscopic and open wrist arthrolysis are both useful techniques for the improvement of wrist stiffness.
