Abstract

This chapter reviews occurrence and distribution of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, melatonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid, acetylcholine, and catecholamines (dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) in edible plant parts. It enumerates roles in human health, beneficial and adverse. It discusses the scope of utilization of these edible plant neurotransmitters in humans through consumption of neurotransmitter-enriched and/or fortified food products, as a substitute for pharmaceutical drugs.
