Abstract

Rationale: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the extent of the NC and body mass index (BMI), duration of ICU stay and death, as a simple and practical anthropometric measurement. Methods: There were 100 patients in the ICU of the Hospital Bandeirantes, Brazil. These patients were followed for 14 weeks and is held weekly measure NC. Our sample had 52% women and 48% men, mean age 65 years (±18 years). The NC was performed by one examiner, a nutritionist at the midpoint in the longitudinal direction of the neck, whose anatomical reference, which were measured, was the laryngeal prominence. Results: The ANOVA and independent sample t test showed that NC in relation to BMI is statistically significant (p 40 cm should be considered high risk for longer periods of ICU stay and death.
