Abstract
- There is evolving evidence that bioactive peptides can be employed successfully to prevent and/or treat obesity. This chapter details the synthetic peptides currently employed as pharmaceutical treatments of obesity. It summarizes their efficacy, mode of action, circulation time, delivery route, and limitations. It also details peptidic drugs under development. Peptides derived from food have also been discovered that modulate appetite and/or reduce weight. This chapter focuses on their in vivo efficacy and the many challenges faced by food peptides or protein hydrolyzates to play a role in weight management.
