Abstract

The present study was conceived to evaluate the effects of the short-term administration of aqueous extract of ST at a dose of 40 mg/kg of body weight during two weeks on the statute of enzymatic antioxidant defense, lipid peroxidation, biochemical parameters and histopathological changes of the liver, of the lung and of the kidneys in male Wistar rats. The administration of ST to the rats caused a significant increase of total proteins, transaminases; ASAT and ALAT, PAL (alkaline phosphatase), Albumin and Creatinine, while comparing them with the control group. Thus, we noted that ST exerts a pro-oxidant effect which is shown on the one hand, by a significant increase of the rate of MDA in the erythrocytes, the liver and the lungs. In addition, by a significant decrease of the activity of the antioxidant enzymes: GPx in the erythrocytes, the liver and the lungs; CAT in the erythrocytes, the liver and the lungs, and SOD in the erythrocytes, the liver and the lungs. Moreover, the harmful effects of the cytotoxicity caused by the ST on pulmonary tissue architecture, hepatic and renal, were revealed by an important cellular amendment.<br />Journal of International Society of Antioxidants in Nutrition & Health, Vol 3, No 3 (2016)
