Rinsing Therapy of Eye Burns

This is the essential point of the initial management of ocular chemical splashes, which is here developed and illustrated by new experimental data of the first importance. The following are successively addressed: the mechanisms of diffusion with utilization of a powerful OCT imaging technique, the osmotic effect with measurement of corneal stroma hydration, and finally the effects of irrigation with fluids in various conditions of chemical injury at the epithelial surface. Numerous original graphics illustrate the results of these innovative studies. The main ocular washing products available on the market for decontamination of chemical splashes are compared and some clear conclusions are formulated as to their advantages, efficacy, and adverse effects. Examples of specific decontamination for radicals, peroxides, and hydrofluoric acid conclude the discussion on a practical dimension.
