Abstract

This article presents the major categories of child and adolescent mental disorders described in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, including neurodevelopmental, depressive, anxiety, and disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders. Current knowledge of symptoms and associated characteristics, epidemiology, and developmental course for each disorder will be covered. The material presented in this article is not meant to be exhaustive, but rather serve as an overview of many of the mental disorders that are commonly first diagnosed in childhood or adolescence in clinic settings.
