Abstract

Tc-99m radiolabelled ciprofloxacin, which we call Infecton, was first described by the radiopharmacist K. Solanki, who noted that the effectiveness of ciprofloxacin diminishes when taken with iron. He postulated that this was because of chelation of the iron with the antibiotic. He, therefore, prophesied that he could chelate technetium-99m to the antibiotic and this would lead to technetium-99m-ciprofloxacin.
