Chondrosarcoma of rib: Report of two cases

Abstract

Two cases of Chondrosarcoma of rib origin are presented.Case 1: A 17-year-old male, incident to a school routine chest roentgenogram, was found tohave a abnormal shadow of the left chest field. At first, he was treated as pleurisy at anotherclinic, later referred to our clinic for operation, under the diagnosis of infiltrated carcinoma followingopen biopsy for the left chest wall tumor.A block resection of the mass was carried out with removal of the second to fouth ribs involved. The histological examination of the specimen showed chondrosarcoma of rib.Case 2: A 46-year-old man, first entered our clinic, with a compliant of a painful mass onthe upper right part of the chest with diagnosis of tuberculous abscess of rib and antituberculousadministration for several months. Ten months after the patient was readmitted to the clinic, becauseof gradual increase of the mass in size.The mass togethere with the fourth, fifth, sixth ribs had been resected.Diagnosis was chondrosarcoma of rib.Both of the patient's postoperative course were uneventful.A brief reveiw was made on 11 cases, 9 cases collected from the literature, 2 from our ownrecords.
