Chapter One. Global Migration And Sojourner Presence

This chapter attempts to conceptualise a new type of migration in the context of global migration. It focuses on Japanese emigrants in Australia. Since Japanese communities in Australia have been formed by various types of settlers and sojourners, it is essential to describe the grounds for Japanese emigration. Although there are some who change their residency from ‘sojourner’ to ‘settler’, in an analysis of inducement factors for contemporary Japanese emigration, the chapter points to changes in the public consciousness, or perceptions, about their emigration. When we seek to identify sojourners among the data of Australian migration studies, we find two basic types: one is the ‘return migrant’ who had migrated to Australia, but did not become a permanent settler; the other is the long-term temporary resident, including those from expatriate corporate families, overseas students or researchers who do not intend to stay permanently in the host Australian society.Keywords: Australia; global migration; Japanese emigrants; Japanese sojourners; public consciousness
