Abstract
- Loneliness is a feeling that may be experienced by individuals of all ages, backgrounds and from countries around the world. Many personal, social and circumstantial factors can play a role in causing someone to feel lonely. Loneliness has neurobiological effects which directly impact an individual's health and well-being, increasing their risk of developing chronic disease and of premature mortality. It is important to identify those at risk of social and psychological isolation, so that health- and social care systems can intervene and offer support as necessary.
