Tails in the Density of States

A simple physical explanation for the observed exponential behavior of the density of states based on short range Gaussian fluctuations is presented. Several techniques for obtaining the density of states and other quantities of physical interest are briefly reviewed. The universal and quasi-universal features of the electronic behavior near a band edge in a disordered material are also presented.
