New confocal LM method for studying local relative microrelief with special reference to wear studies

Subtracting a smoothed version of a digital map image from the unprocessed original leaves a map of the local surface relief. The map in question is obtained by through focussing with a confocal reflection microscope, retaining the focus value for the greatest signal level at each X,Y pixel address as the Z (height/depth) coordinate.
