Abstract

The facial nerve supplies muscles that are derived from the second pharyngeal arch. At birth, the facial nerve is located beneath the skin near the mastoid tip, where it emerges from the temporal bone. As the mastoid tip continues to elongate during childhood, the facial nerve becomes more medially located. Axons of the facial nerve do not complete myeli nation until the age of four.
