The risk and protection of lightning disaster in Potala Palace

Through the investigation of the lightning disaster in Potala Palace, it is found that Potala Palace is located in the position of lightning strike easily. The main factors that lead to lightning disaster are its self structure, the trees induce lightning, the change of the internal environment and the inductive thunder of the metal in the hall. The main losses caused by lightning stroke, such as fire and casualties, are analyzed. The basic principles of lightning protection in Potala Palace are discussed. It is proposed that the original jinding and all kinds of metal ornaments of the roof should be used as lightning protection system according to the discharge characteristics of lightning and the structural features of Tibetan heritage buildings.
