Why does economic decline raise national identity ?

In this study, we will apply Identity Coherence Model (Chai 2001, 2009) to national identity formation in Japan. According to this theory, actors face expected regret adjust their preferences and beliefs. We can predict that expected regret about living in Japan will contribute to the formation of national identity. This prediction is tested in this study through a survey experiment.
