Message-passing-systems on workstation clusters and parallel computers — the impact of software- and network-architectures on applications

Parallel computer systems have reached a share of interest that is already far beyond the sacred halls of universities and research laboratories. The amount of performance delivered today theoretically allows for the tackling of so called grand challenge problems. But there is still the software-gap that keeps us from fully exploiting the performance of such systems.
