Abstract
- Compared tothe general antenatal population major congenital malfor-mations were increased two-fold and perinatal mortalityrates four-fold. Pregnancy outcomes were similarly pooramong the 2,407 women with type 1 and the 1,401women with type 2 diabetes. A major finding from thisaudit was that women with pre-gestational diabetes wereinadequately prepared for pregnancy, with poor evidencefor, or documentation of, pre-pregnancy counselling, pre-conception use of folic acid or safe glycaemic targets beingachieved prior to pregnancy. This lack of pre-pregnancy carewas especially true for women with type 2 diabetes who asa group had higher levels of social deprivation and greaterethnic diversity than those with type 1 diabetes.
