Abstract

I am in complete agreement with the substantive content of Mr. Beck’s article. He did misunderstand however the purpose of my analysis. I shall try to clarify this misunderstanding, even though in the end he may disagree even more. I. In his second paragraph he compares my algebraic formulations with conventional statistical notations where dichotomies are treated as “dummy variables” taking the values, O-l. I am, of course, very aware of this “Lazarsfeld-translation” possibility. However for a long time I have proposed treating proportions and dichotomies in their own right without deriving them as special cases of conventional analyses of quantitative variables. I have been guided in my work by several considerations.
