Abstract

Advances in neuroscience have given us new strategies for managing regulation disorders. These relatively new “bottom up” strategies are anecdotally said to provide positive outcomes for people with autonomic nervous system regulation disorders. The Safe and Sound Protocol is one such approach. It is a therapeutic listening program which aims to improve middle ear functioning in order to improve neurological safety (neuroception), to reduce auditory sensitivities and constant sympathetic state hyperarousal and promote social engagement ultimately leading to improved performance of activities of daily living. This systematic review aims to appraise the current evidence for the Safe and Sound Protocol (formerly known as the Integrated Listening System).
