Abstract

This paper describes a satellite-based remote sensing technique to measure the deformation of terrain, infrastructures and structures. The technique is based on SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data and the interferometric method. The work makes reference to two types of techniques: Differential Interferometric SAR (DInSAR) and Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI). The work describes four examples of PSI results, which have been achieved using the software chain developed by CTTC. The first result is an example of terrain deformation due to water extraction, which concerns Mexico City (Mexico). The second result represents an example of deformation induced by water extraction in a local environment. These two examples illustrate the potential contribution of PSI in the management of water resources. The third example is related to the monitoring of a construction work area located in the city of Barcelona (Spain). This is an example where even small displacement can have a high impact on the buildings surrounding the construction work area. Finally, the last example refers to a mining area located in Catalonia (Spain).
