Abstract

Use of a kinetic model is made to predict parameters used in the operation and control of the activated sludge process. Mean cell residence time Θ c is the basis for comparing process parameters under different conditions of operation. Effluent organic concentration, percentage of organic removal efficiency, cell concentrations, and daily sludge production are found as functions of Θ c for different influent waste concentrations and hydraulic residence times Θ. Sludge settling data are also shown as a function of Θ c . Based on graphical relationships of the preceding parameters, a sample design and operation example is formulated to illustrate practical use of the kinetic model.
