Abstract: The problem of cumulus parameterization in large-scale models is discussed. Several popular current schemes for penetrative and shallow convection are described and verified in semi-prognostic tests and in a full global forecast model. The results from the global experiments, in particular, indicate uncertainties in the parameterizations of penetrative and shallow convection, as well as in the interaction of cumulus cloud fields with radiation.
