The requirements of successful teaching

Teaching is an art, and like any art it is difficult to master. It is true nevertheless that the requirements of successful teaching can be stated with a substantial degree of definiteness. It is one thing, of course, to know the requirements of successful teaching and something else to be able to apply them. On the other hand, it is certain that there can be no application of knowledge in the absence of knowledge. It is important therefore that we come to know the requirements of successful teaching at the level of verbal understanding as the first step in coming to know them at the level of application.
