Abstract
- Summary Several theories have been advanced to explain the magnetic properties of rocks. Measurements reported here have been made on specimens from a single lava to investigate the use of the theoretical relationships to determine the amount and nature of the oxides responsible for the NRM, the extent to which the original moment appears to have been disturbed and appropriate models to describe the magnetic particle distribution. Evidence for low temperature oxidation is common enough to call into question whether the theories of TRM are applicable. The oxides in these specimens are changed by heating, so anhysteretic moments were induced in an attempt to compare these with the theoretically expected values and thus to estimate if the natural remanent moment of a specimen is of the size that would be expected for the oxide dispersion.
