Abstract

In this position paper, we outline the essential features for an academic palliative care program. Our goal was to assist both academic palliative care faculty and their stakeholders (department chairmen, deans, and others) in building sustainable high-quality academic palliative care programs. We also provide the background that justifies such an effort. Palliative medicine provides coordinated, interdisciplinary care for a growing population of patients and their families with complex care needs as they face a life-threatening or serious condition.
