Abstract

57. * Eugenia purpusii Standley, Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 23: 1678 (1926) EOO: 24,552.553 km ². AOO: 12 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. Eugenia purpusii occurs only in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. With only three collection records distributed in the municipalities of “Santa María Huazolotitlán”, belonging to the Costa region, “San Lorenzo Victoria”, which belongs to the Mixteca region and in the municipality of “Santiago Pinotepa Nacional”, which is in the Costa region. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) nearly exceeds the thresholds of a threatened category under the criteria B, whilst the area of occupancy (AOO) falls within the thresholds of Endangered category, but it could fairly fall within the Vulnerable category due to the area of habitat still available. There are only up to three known locations based on records or literature, and different ongoing threats. The biomes where it occurs are the Humid Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest, which can be found from 200 to 1,200 m elev. The habitat is mainly in a good state of conservation according to the ecological degradation index, apart from the habitat of the Mixteca region, where the species is found in forests with a high degradation due to the pressure of human activities (CONABIO 2018). Taking a precautionary approach, Eugenia purpusii is classified as Vulnerable under the criteria B 2ab(iii), D2, considering its restricted area of occupancy, the number of locations (3), an inferred continuing decline of habitat quality, plus plausible future threats which could drive the taxon to CR or EX in a very short time. Further field survey and information are needed to assess the population size, risk of stochastic events and habitat trends. Specimen examined:— MEXICO.
