Abstract

13. * Eugenia cantuana Lundell, Wrightia 3: 122 (1965) EOO: 126.662 km ². AOO: 12 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. Eugenia cantuana is endemic to Mexico and occurs in Morelos and Guerrero states, in Humid Montane Forests and in the Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall between the thresholds of Critically Endangered and Endangered categories under the criterion B. There are only two known locations based in four records available: one location is represented by the records mainly in areas of well-preserved vegetation and lower anthropic pressure, in the borders of “Parque Nacional El Tepozteco” (state of Morelos), and another is within a locality known as Manchón Parotas (Guerrero). Although the species occurs within a protected area and in an area with low anthropic impact, from what is not possible to infer a continuing decline of habitat, it is near the urban area and any disruption caused by anthropic activities (fire events or agricultural or urban expansion) could drive the taxon to the CR or EX in a very short time. Therefore, considering its restricted area of occupancy and the number of locations, Eugenia cantuana is classified as Vulnerable (VU), as it meets the criterion D2. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. Morelos: Soto 1391 (MEXU); Guerrero: Hilton 10076 (K!).<br />Published as part of Uc Gala, Victor C., Valdemarin, Karinne Sampaio, Lucas, Eve, Negrão, Raquel & Mazine, Fiorella F., 2023, Eugenia (Myrtaceae) from Mexico: checklist, distribution, and conservation assessments, pp. 99-140 in Phytotaxa 583 (2) on pages 106-107, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.583.2.1, http://zenodo.org/record/7609258
