Abstract

36. Eugenia karwinskyana O.Berg, Linnaea 29: 244 (1858) EOO: 653,188.825 km ². AOO: 288 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. = Eugenia tabascensis Lundell, Phytologia 1: 482 (1941). = Eugenia yucatanensis Standley, Publ. Field Columb. Mus., Bot. Ser. 8: 28 (1930). Eugenia karwinskyana has a wide distribution within Mexico, but it also occurs in Belize and Guatemala (WCSP 2020). The biome of occurrence of the species in Mexican territory is the Dry and Humid Tropical Forest, from 0 to 1,500 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. The area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of any threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are more than 10 known locations based on 24 collection records in Mexico within protected areas such as “Reserva de la Biosfera Los Tuxtlas”, in Veracruz, “Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka´an”, “Porción norte de la franja costera oriental, terrestre y marinas de la Isla de Cozumel”, in Quintana Roo and “Reserva de la Biosfera Ria Lagartos”, in Yucatán. The habitat of the species for being in protected areas is in a good state of conservation, thus allowing its development (CONABIO 2018, CONANP 2006a, CONANP 2014, DOF 2012, INE-SEMARNAP 1999e). Therefore, according with the BGCI & IUCN (2019f), Eugenia karwinskyana is classified as Least Concern (LC) in terms of its degree of threat due to EOO greater than 20,000 km ² and occurring in protected areas without imminent threats into several countries. Specimens examined:— Aguascalientes (Maury 6349 (MEXU!); Chiapas: Ton 2280 (LL); Puebla: Meza 566 (MEXU!); Quintana Roo: Cabrera & Téllez 11125 (MEXU!); San Luis Potosí: Maury 6349 (MEXU!); Tabasco: Matuda 3561 (K!); Veracruz: Robledo et al. 838 (MEXU!); Yucatán: Cabrera & Cabrera 11189 (MEXU!). Belize: Contreras 7160 (MO); Guatemala: Contreras 7855 (LL).
Published as part of Uc Gala, Victor C., Valdemarin, Karinne Sampaio, Lucas, Eve, Negrão, Raquel & Mazine, Fiorella F., 2023, Eugenia (Myrtaceae) from Mexico: checklist, distribution, and conservation assessments, pp. 99-140 in Phytotaxa 583 (2) on page 114, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.583.2.1, http://zenodo.org/record/7609258
{"references":["WCSP (World Checklist of Selected Plant Families) (2020) Myrtaceae.
