Abstract

The function of the distal esophageal segment, after incision, primary repair, and enforcement with a Belsey-type fundoplication, was studied in 32 opossums divided into four groups. In groups I-A and I-B, the fundoplicated esophageal segment was left above the diaphragm and in groups II-A and II-B, it was secured below the diaphragm. The pre- and postoperative esophageal sphincteric function was studied by manometry, acid reflux testing, and cineesophagography. The preoperative results were not significantly different from those of 2 months postoperative.
