Abstract

78. * Eugenia uliginosa Lundell, Wrightia 3: 20 (1961b) EOO: 114,240.681 km ². AOO: 32 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened. Eugenia uliginosa is distributed in the states of Veracruz, Chiapas, and Oaxaca from 270 to 950 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B, as well as the area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of Endangered category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are eight known locations based on 10collections recorded. The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest. The habitat is mostly conserved and with little alteration. Some localities in Chiapas that are within the region known as “Selva Lacandona”, are in excellent condition, as well as the “Reserva de la Biosfera Los Tuxtlas”, in Veracruz, which has conserved forests. However, the situation in Oaxaca is different, and the species is found in remnants of impacted forests and under a lot of pressure from the urban area expansion (CONABIO 2018, CONANP 2006a), from where a continuing decline of habitat quality is inferred. Eugenia uliginosa is classified as Near Threatened (NT) due to the restricted number of locations related to an inferred decline of habitat quality, especially in Oaxaca and uncertainties on its area of occupancy (AOO). Its assessment as a threatened species based on AOO will be pending of further field surveys to confirm its current distribution, population size, local threats, and habitat trend.
