The analysis of Eric von Rosen’s archaeological collection (Etnografiska museet, Sweden): the contribution of the Swedish Chaco-Cordillera Expedition to the study of mining and metallurgy in the Puna of Jujuy, Argentina

This paper approaches the Swedish Chaco-Cordillera Expedition to the North of Argentina and South of Bolivia (1901-1902) and it focuses on the archaeological objects recovered. Besides the analysis performed by Eric von Rosen in 1902-1903, no further in-depth studies of the collection had been since carried out, despite its great potential to elucidate different aspects of the Andean and lowlands’ pre-Columbian past. Combining the analysis of the publications made by the members of the expedition and their unpublished personal documentation, as well as the study of the collection itself, this paper aims to offer new data on these findings and show the contribution that these materials, and the interpretations the Swedish researchers formulated about them, made to the understanding of the metallurgy and mining activities developed during the pre-Columbian Late Period (AD 1200-1550) in the Puna of Jujuy, Argentina. Cette note de recherche présente l’expédition suédoise Chaco-Cordillera dans le nord de l’Argentine et le sud de la Bolivie (1901-1902), puis analyse les objets archéologiques qu’elle a collectés. Depuis le travail d’Eric von Rosen en 1902-1903, aucune autre étude approfondie de la collection n’avait été réalisée à ce jour, alors que ces objets permettent d’éclairer différents aspects du passé précolombien des Andes et des basses terres. Fondée sur les publications des membres de l’expédition et sur leur documentation personnelle inédite, ainsi que sur l’examen de la collection elle-même, cette note offre de nouvelles données sur cette collection. Ces matériaux et les interprétations que les chercheurs suédois en ont proposées représentent en effet une contribution précieuse à la compréhension des activités minières et métallurgiques de la Puna de Jujuy (Argentine) pendant la période précolombienne tardive (1200-1550 apr. J.-C.). Este trabajo aborda la expedición Sueca Chaco-Cordillerana al Norte de Argentina y Sur de Bolivia (1901-1902) y se centra en los objetos arqueológicos recuperados por ella. Más allá del análisis realizado por Eric von Rosen en 1902-1903, hasta el momento no se habían realizado otros estudios en profundidad de dicha colección, a pesar de su gran potencial para dilucidar diferentes aspectos del pasado prehispánico andino y de las tierras bajas. Combinando el análisis de las publicaciones de los miembros de la expedición y de su documentación personal inédita, como también el estudio de la propia colección, este trabajo ofrece nuevos datos sobre los hallazgos realizados y muestra la contribución que estos materiales y las interpretaciones que los investigadores suecos formularon sobre ellos, tuvieron para la comprensión de la metalurgia y minería de la Puna de Jujuy durante el Período prehispánico Tardío (1200-1550 d. C.).
