The transposition of Dante and Beatrice into the underworld of the Drancy camp through the anus of Daniel Zimmermann

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the intertextuality of Dante Alighieri’s Vita nova in Daniel Zimmermann’s L’Anus du monde. This fictional account of the Holocaust depicts François Katz, a Jewish university student who is an atheist and a deported bourgeois. As a re- sult of his deportation experience, which we in- terpret as a journey of initiation, Alighieri and his work, are considered by Katz as a human and literary reference. Following this perspec- tive, we will show the transfiguration of Dante and of Béatrice in François and Myriam, which will help explain the psychological transpo- sition of the bourgeois courting mirrored by Zimmermann in the concentration camp envi- ronment. Furthermore, we have focused our at- tention on the intertextual presence of Cantique des cantiques and of Talmud. This transtextual approach will allow us to explain the stylistic choice of the novelist whose intention is to avoid any type of parodic interpretation of his- torical referents. El objetivo de este artículo es interpretar la presencia textual de Dante Alighieri y de su posímetro Vita Nova en L’Anus du monde de Daniel Zimmermann. Este relato ficticio sobre la Shoah pone en escena a François Katz, un universitario judío deportado en virtud de las leyes raciales. Durante su deportación, que con- sideraremos un “viaje iniciático”, el poeta flo- rentino y su obra son para Katz una referencia humana y literaria. Partiendo de esta perspecti- va, mostraremos la transfiguración de Dante y de Beatriz en François y en Myriam, lo que nos permitirá explicar la dimensión psicológica de la transposición de la conquista cortés contem- plada por Zimmermann en el campo de Drancy. Por otro lado, hemos centrado nuestra atención en la presencia del Cantar de los Cantares y del Talmud en la novela para estudiar su signi- ficado. Este enfoque transtextual nos permitirá explicar la elección estilística del novelista que pretende evitar cualquier interpretación paródi- ca de referencias históricas.
