Abstract
- In nonlinear response history analysis, equivalent viscous damping is often used with Rayleigh damping. For inelastic structures, this may lead to spurious damping forces. Moreover, the equivalent viscous damping is often based on vibration measurements of elastic structures. Consequently, the use of equivalent viscous damping assumes that the damping properties are identical in the elastic and inelastic range. To avoid these issues, hysteresis can be implemented explicitly in the material behavior. Because of the limited ductility of timber members, the connections often provide the ductility and energy-dissipating capacity of a timber structure. For such structures, a lumped plasticity model with hysteretic connection behavior is suitable. In this paper, a semi-analytical hysteretic model for laterally loaded timber connections with dowel-type fasteners is presented based on the individual fastener behavior. The model includes damage from cyclic loading and can be generalized to an arbitrary connection layout.
Experimental Mechanics in Engineering and Biomechanics - Proceedings ICEM20
ISBN:978-989-54756-6-7
