PROSPECTION AND RETROSPECTION AS TEMPORAL MARKERS OF TEXT ORGANIZATION IN THE NOVEL 'THE CHOICE' BY N. SPARKS

The article is dedicated to the investigation of the peculiarities of the categories of prospection and retrospection in the aspect of artistic communication, namely, considering these two compositional components from the point of view of their functioning as temporal markers of text organization. The study of the category of time in many of its expressions is intriguing by the fact, that time relates to a number of such phenomena, which contain in themselves certain ambiguity as, firstly, in a person’s perception time continuance can be regarded differently and, secondly, time may possess multidirectional field of vectors. In such a case subjectivity plays a significant role and influences, on the one hand, different manifestations of characters’ behavior in a text of imaginative prose and, on the other hand, the very process of concepts design and structuring. Descriptive and quantitative analyses supply us with the opportunity to define lexical means of representation of the category of time in the novel “The Choice” by Nicholas Sparks, among which a certain role is given to the very title word, which functions as the most prominent mode of actualization of the categories of prospection and retrospection. It is important to contemplate not only the semantics of the given lexical vocabulary unit, which, first of all, contains the idea of prospectiveness, but also its qualitative and distributive characteristics, which ensure the dynamics of the plot development of the novel. The story line reaches its culmination partly because of its coincidence with the highest recurrence of the lexeme “choice”. Contextual-interpretational method of functional and linguistic analyses makes us consider that, on the one hand, that multidirection of vector manifold of text organization may be regarded as a dominant feature of artistic time in the novel, and, on the other hand, such an approach lets us interpret the given peculiarity as a determinant in the process of text continuum organization as a whole.
