Lessons in medicine, mortality, and reflexive verbs

During my internship at a county hospital in southern California, we learned much of our Spanish from patients. My own best teacher was a young woman who was admitted with acute myeloid leukemia, and she taught me considerably more than Spanish nouns and verbs.
