Abstract

56. * Eugenia pueblana Lundell, Wrightia 2: 167 (1961a) EOO: 9.531, 752 km ². AOO: 20 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. Eugenia pueblana is endemic to Mexico, with distribution in three states, Puebla, Veracruz, and Querétaro, from 920 to 1,200 m elev. The biome where it occurs is the Humid Montane Forest. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls between the thresholds of Endangered and Vulnerable categories, under the criterion B, whilst the area of occupancy (AOO) falls within the thresholds of Endangered category, but it could fairly fall within the Vulnerable category due to the area of habitat still available. There are only up to five known locations, based on five records, and there are different ongoing threats. The habitat is in a good state of conservation in the state of Querétaro, as some collections were carried out within the protected area “Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra Gorda”, an area of great biological richness of both fauna and flora (CONABIO 2018, Luna et al. 1988, 1989, 1994, INE-SEMARNAP 1999d). The species can be considered rare due to the low number of collections within the region. Considering its occurrence in lower altitudinal range, potentially more affected by human activities and the occurrence within only a protected area, Eugenia pueblana is classified as Vulnerable (VU), as it meets the criteria B 1ab(iii)+ B 2ab(iii), D2. Further, field survey and information is needed to assess the population size, risk of stochastic events and habitat trends. Specimens examined:— MEXICO.
