Abstract

This chapter covers the subject of signal and image processing. The basics of storing and reading 1-D signals are introduced, and the signal processing technique of convolution is described in detail. The basics of images in MATLAB are reviewed and extended, including the difference between color and gray scale images, getting information about an image, viewing an image and accessing/saving sub-regions of an image. Simple image processing operations such as binarization and thresholding are covered and it is shown how simple operations can be chained together to produce a more complex pipeline of operations. Finally, image filtering is described and its relationship to convolution is discussed.
