Abstract
- The Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic (2.6 - 1.0 Ga) of the Northern Territory and Queensland regions in Australia are dominated by the development of sedimentary basins that are highly prospective for minerals and hydrocarbon. Due to relatively little exploration, the South Nicholson region is one of Australia's least understood areas. Despite growing interest in mineral and petroleum prospectivity, minimal seismic, well, and geophysical data exists for the region. A vital outcome of the recently published Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program was the discovery of the new sub-basin named Carrara Sub-basin. The presence of several key hydrocarbon source rock containing intervals, including the Lawn and River supersequences, were confirmed in the Northern Lawn Hill Platform (NLHP). Recent drilling over the South Nicholson region confirmed the presence of the Lawn Supersequence in the basin, making it highly prospective for unconventional hydrocarbons. We apply new data from the recent drilling to estimate the magnitude of exhumation in the South Nicholson region. We estimate the decompacted thickness, porosity, and maximum burial depths of key stratigraphic horizons identified within the South Nicholson Basin and the underlying Isa Superbasin. Our results may shed light on critical geological events and parameters in the basin (including uplift, subsidence and sedimentation rate) and the resulting burial history is a crucial step in determining the mineral and hydrocarbon prospectivity of the region.<br />Open-Access Online Publication: May 29, 2023
